Proclamation Recognizing Opal Lee, the Juneteenth Federal Holiday and the Opal Lee Day of Advocacy, Leadership and Service in Crowley ISD Whereas, Ms. Opal Lee of Fort Worth, Texas, through her many years of leadership and dedication, ensured that Juneteenth become a nationally-recognized holiday; and, Whereas, On Thursday, June 17, 2021, The United States Congress answered her call and, with Ms. Opal Lee standing beside him in the White House, President Joe Biden signed legislation establishing a new federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery; and, Whereas, Through her teaching, activism and dedicated campaigning, Ms. Opal Lee channels her personal experiences of racism and segregation to educate and transform others; and, Whereas, Because of Ms. Opal Lee, the story of Juneteenth is being told, and we can use this momentum to continue working towards unity, equality and the freedom of all people; and, Whereas, Juneteenth holiday celebrations in Crowley ISD will be intentional, as well as recognize the endeavors of Ms. Opal Lee to make this a reality for generations to come; and, Whereas, In addition to celebrating Juneteenth, the District will also designate every October 7, the date of Ms. Opal Lee’s birth, as the “Opal Lee Day of Advocacy, Leadership and Service” for Crowley ISD students, staff and community members; and, Whereas, As one of the premier K-12 public educational institutions in Tarrant County, Crowley ISD extends our appreciation for Ms. Opal Lee’s victory and ongoing efforts. We are thankful for her persistence, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to this cause. Now, therefore, the Crowley ISD Board of Trustees so here by recognize Ms. Opal Lee and proclaim that every October 7 will be the Opal Lee Day of Advocacy, Leadership and Service in Crowley ISD.
